HOW TO CRACK NET/SET

HOW TO CRACK NET SET IN ENGLISH LITERATURE

KNOW WHAT TO READ

Ø Note down the syllabus. Be specific to the syllabus while preparing.

Ø Don't scare about the syllabus. Start with the topic you can cover faster.

Ø It is impossible to read all minute topics of syllabus thoroughly. So, concentrate more on famous works/authors.

Ø Go through the previous papers to get an overall idea about questioning, syllabus and important areas.

Ø Go through the concepts first, then practice MCQs. Without learning the concept, mere practising of MCQs is a waste of time.

Ø Download NTA NET/ various SET question papers from my blog. Practice at least 50 questions a day from previous papers.

HOW TO READ

Ø Identify what type of  leaner you are (auditory, visual, kinesthetic). Some learners  prefer to listen more (Auditory learner). Some learners prefer to read, watch videos, and write notes (visual learner). Some learners teach their peers and learn. Some prefer to read along with music.

Ø Identify the convienient time of the day for preparation. Some prefer to read during night and some in the morning. Allocate some time in a day for preparation and maintain consistency in preparation.

PURCHASE STANDARD NOTES/BOOKS AND PREPARE/ADD YOUR OWN NOTES

Ø  We just purchase the books and keep them in shelves. Without even reading the book, we run for the next book. Remember there in no bad book. Every book has its own style. So try to get the gist of that book and make notes.

Ø  There is no short cut to success. Many students are trying to achieve without any hard work. but that is not possible.

Ø  Purchase and read the standard books which are mentioned in the above links.

Ø  If you want the taste of true literature first of all, begin your preparation with "Background to the study of English literature by PRASAD" and "History of English literature" by W J LONG.

Ø  Use dictionary of literary terms book by M H ABRAMS or M A R HABIB.

Ø  These standard books too have a limitation, they don't cover the entire syllabus of NET/SET.

Ø   Of course, No book or material can cover the 100% questions of NET. If you observe the pattern, every year, UGC NET is exploring new areas; and 10 to 20% of the exam are from these new areas and they are ungooglable too.

Ø   You can go for well prepared coaching materials, But do not depend too much on coaching notes. No teacher/ coaching centre can make you to clear the NET, unless you determined to clear NET/SET with your work hard. self study/practice is the best approach, with reliable notes/standard books. You must update the notes frequently.

Ø   Take any one coaching material/ standard books as mentioned in the link and prepare/ add your own notes to it.

Ø  Add notes from various sources like the books you read; or from websites like wikipedia , sparknotes, cliff notes, gradesaver, litcharts etc.

STRATEGY FOR PAPER 1

Ø Paper- I consists of 50 questions, which is common to all subjects.

Ø There are 10 topics in the syllabus and we get 5 questions from each topic.

Ø Concentrate well on paper 1. Remember it is going to decide our fate.

Ø  Many aspirants ignore the paper1 and directly attempt the paper-I without preparation/no preparton.

Ø  It is very easy to do atleast 25 to 30 questions in this paper. (syllabus and scope of questions is very limited, compared to paper-2)

Ø  If you practice the previous papers well, you can get good marks in it. Many aspirants have the phobia for mathematics. but remember that is not pure mathematics. Questions are asked from specific tiopics like time and distance, ratio proportion, simple and compound interest etc., in general arithmetic. The reasoning and data interpretation questions can be solved with a little practice.

Ø Try to score maximum marks in paper-I, so that your chances to crack UGC NTA NET/ SET will be improved.

STRATEGY FOR PAPER 2

Ø  Paper 2 consists of 100 questions from English literature. It is not possible to cover entire syllabus or all the works/authors thoroughly. Infact we can do a research/ Ph.D work on one author or one work, which is a life time achievement for a scholar

Ø  So, Concentrate more on major authors. If he/she is a minor author give importance to his/her contributions to English literature.

Ø  We will get questions from British literature, i.e, Anglo Norman to postmodern. Observe the recent trends, we hardly get very few questions from Anglo Saxon, to Shakespeare Age,

Ø  So, concentrate more on post romantic areas, i.e, from 18th century literature to post modern literature.

Ø  The world literatures in English are also very important. Ex: Indian, American, African, Canadian Australian, Japanese, Nigerian etc.

Ø  Make notes for various kinds of drama, novel, poetic forms; and rhetoric and prosody.

Ø  Try to read important works in detail. You must have the knowledge of  summary, quotations, characters, year of publication, source (allusions), important incidents, important lines etc. (360 degree view is necessary in studying major works)

Ø If it is poetry read and memorize the important lines of the poem, figures of speech in the poem, summary etc.

Ø  Don't ignore literary theory and criticism, many aspirants don't even dare to touch this area. concentrate more on cultural studies, post colonial, feminism, new criticim, structuralism and post structuralism.

Ø  According to the new pattern every minute detail may be asked in examination.

Ø  Concentrate more on first work, best work, last/unfinished work of authors. Chronological questions became more common in the recent exams. You can solve them with analysis, recalling the first and last works and with the help of mnemonics (short codes)

IMPORTANT TIPS

Ø Consistency in preparation is needed. Many aspirants start preparation after the releasing of notification, but you must finish your preparation, before notifiation and revise the topics as many times as possible.

Ø  Once Bruce Lee said, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times". This quote shows the importance of practice.

Ø  Read and revise the topics well. Revision is important. Without revision you can't remember any thing.

Ø  Mnemonics (short codes) are important in remembering questions on chronological order. Sometimes we cant even answer the familiar questions due to confusion and lack of strong mnemonics.

Ø Time management before the exam and during exam is more crucial.

Ø Reading the question carefuly before you answer is very important. Sometimes we ignore/miss mnute details from the question and go for a wrong answer in a hurry.

Ø  Eliminating the wrong options is one of the best strategies to follow in exams to answer any question.

All the best
