TS SET 2019- PAPER-II ENGLISH (HELD ON 06.07.2019) keshava reddy cheraku July 06, 2019 TGSET No comments: Q.1- 5 Comprehension: Criticism is a study by which men grow important and formidable at very small expense. The power of invention has been conferred by nature upon few, and the labour of leaming those sciences which may, by mere labour, be obtained is too great to be willingly endured; but every man can exert such judgment as he has upon the works of others; and he whom nature has made weak, and idleness keeps ignorant, may yet support his vanity by the name of a critic. I hope it will give comfort to great numbers who are passing through the world in obscurity when I inform them how easily distinction may be obtained. All the other powers of literature are coy and haughty, they must be long courted, and at last are not always gained; but criticism is a goddess easy of access and forward of advance, who will meet the slow and encourage the timourous ; the want of meanings he supplies with words, and the want of spirit she recompenses with malignity. This profession has one recommendation peculiar to itself, that it gives vent to malignity without real mischief. No genius was ever blasted by the breath of critics. The poison which, if confined. would have burst the heart, fumes a way in empty hisses, and malice is set at ease with very little danger to merit. The critic is the only man whose triumph is without another's pain, and whose greatness does not rise upon another's ruin. To a study at once so easy and so reputable, so malicious and so harmless it cannot be necessary to invite my readers by a long or laboured exhortation; it is sufficient, since all would be critics if they could, to show by one eminent example that all can be critics if they will. Question-1 The main purpose of the passage is to 1. Urge the reader to become a critic 2. Explain how critics find their inspiration 3. Unmask the biases of certain critics 4. Ridicule critics as inept but self-important Explanation: The passage satirizes critics, portraying them as people who seek importance without possessing real intellectual or creative ability. The author highlights how critics gain recognition with minimal effort, making criticism seem trivial and self-serving rather than meaningful. Check Your Answer Q.2 In the context of the passage the first sentence is best viewed as 1. Ironic 2. Metaphoric 3. Understated 4. Redundant Explanation: The first sentence presents criticism as a way for people to gain importance at little expense. This is ironic because the author implies that critics do not possess true talent or depth, making their significance somewhat hollow Check Your Answer Q.3 In the opening line, "at very small expense" is best understood to mean 1. Unintentionally 2. Without needing to be wealthy 3. With very little effort 4. To little purpose Explanation: The phrase suggests that critics can establish themselves without investing much effort or original thinking. The passage implies that criticism is an easy field compared to more demanding intellectual or creative pursuits. Check Your Answer Q.4 In the third paragraph "poison" is best understood to mean 1. Hackneyed phrases 2. Malicious words 3. Self-serving remarks 4. Untrue statements Explanation: The term "poison" metaphorically refers to the negativity and harmful remarks that critics spread. "Power of invention" (first paragraph) 2. "Vanity" (first paragraph) 3. "Great numbers" (second paragraph) 4.
